The LORD will make you the head and not the tail; you will only move upward and never downward if you listen to the LORD your God’s commands I am giving you today and are careful to follow them. – Deuteronomy 28:13
Moses’s declaration (above) is found in a larger section of blessings and curses upon the nation of Israel that is directly tied to their obedience to God’s commands. As I read this particular verse, I was both encouraged and warned.
If I apply this truth to my own life, does it mean that if I am “moving downward” it is a result of my disobedience? Possibly, for if I ignore God’s truth in my life, the result will never be positive. Or, does it mean that if I am “moving upward” it is a result of my obedience? Possibly, for if I adhere to God’s truth in my life, the result will always be positive. Perhaps, both are true.
If you adhere to God’s truth, you will always lead out in the accomplishment of God’s purposes. If you ignore His truth, you will remain subject to the wisdom of this world and find yourself in a position far from the Lord’s intended purposes and desires.
Hold fast to His truth and one thing is certain, you will never be “the tail.”
If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get neither comfort nor truth…. – C. S. Lewis
