Give Me the Hill Country

Now give me this hill country the LORD promised [me] on that day, because you heard then that the Anakim are there, as well as large fortified cities. Perhaps the LORD will be with me and I will drive them out as the LORD promised. – Joshua 14:12

My favorite Bible personage is without a doubt, Caleb (son of Jephunneh). He, alone, stood by Joshua’s side when all the other spies would not and, at the ripe old age of 85, refused to give up or give in. Instead, Caleb asked for the mountain.  He could have had the “valley of rest,” but he chose a life of giant-fighting in its place.

Where did Caleb obtain such strength of purpose and determination and courage? The same place that so many have before and since. Quite simply, Caleb trusted God. The Lord had told him that he would have an inheritance in the promised land and Caleb never doubted what God had said. Seeking always to remain in the Lord’s presence, Caleb TOOK his mountain and … like Caleb … all “mountain-takers” need strength beyond themselves. They need Christ.

Where is your mountain? Perhaps, it is time to take it.

Give me the comma of imperfect striving, thus to find zest in the immediate living. Ever the reaching but never the gaining, ever the climbing but never the attaining of the mountain top. – Winston Graham
