An Israelite man came bringing a Midianite woman to his relatives in the sight of Moses and the whole Israelite community while they were weeping at the entrance to the tent of meeting. – Numbers 25:6
At Peor, the Israelites began to take wives from the neighboring tribes (behavior clearly forbidden by God’s law given on Mt. Sinai). This, of course, angered God and grieved Moses (and many of the other leaders when they discovered the news). In the midst of weeping before God, one of the leaders (called Zimri) actually walked up to the place where the others were grieving … BRINGING A MIDIANITE WOMAN! Apparently this man, numbed to the seriousness of his sin, acted as if he was completely ignorant of God’s pronounced prohibition.
One sign of a depraved culture is when a majority of the populace becomes ignorant of sin that used to be considered reprehensible. When things that were once morally (and I should add rightly) unacceptable become generally acceptable, then what was once “right” becomes “aberrant” and “abnormal.” Unfortunately, society reaches this point in its history, it is destined for destruction and already damned … a current reality in our own nation. In spite of this, is there any hope?
Yes, with Christ and His Body living and speaking to the populace a message of truth, love, grace, and salvation until He returns. On the other hand, if this same Body becomes inactive and silent, even though there is always hope in Christ, there is no hope for the culture. It not only WILL die, it MUST.
Aim above morality. Be not simply good, be good for something. – Henry David Thoreau
