And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. – Hebrews 10:19-22
In spite of all the formal education I have received, one personal practice has been more beneficial to my growth as a Christ-follower than almost all the seminary classes combined. It is the discipline of daily time in God’s Word. At times, it seems like a chore, but it is an important discipline and I never stop learning! If all goes as planned, this year I will complete it for the 32nd time.
The Scriptures are a bottomless well of the knowledge and wisdom of God. For example, as I was reading through the letter to the Hebrews a few years ago, I realized from the passage above that the temple veil was a “type” of Christ. How did I ever miss that?! I always knew that at the moment of His death the veil was torn from the top to the bottom (signifying God’s provision of access to the holy of holies and intimate fellowship with our Creator), but for some reason it never struck me that this was an image of Christ’s body, His flesh, His sacrifice … a new and living way inaugurated for us.
I am overwhelmed with thankfulness for the sacrifice Christ made for me, but also for the limitless riches of God’s Word; therefore, I will keep on reading. So should you.
A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education. – Theodore Roosevelt
