They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity — all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved. – Acts 2:46-47
As a pastor, missionary, and now missional strategist I have often asked myself, “What is the ‘key’ to church growth?” What I have come to understand is that this is the wrong question to be asking. You see, there is no “key.”
Every day after Pentecost, the Lord was adding to His Body those who were being saved. Notice that the Body was not at all concerned about “adding,” they were only concerned with “praising.” They concentrated on God’s praise and this apparently influenced their favor with all the people. At the same time, they were also growing in unity, fellowship, and peace.
Would you like to see your church grow? Then stop trying to grow it. Praise God. Put your focus on Him and Him alone. Yes, tell others about all He has done. Yes, proclaim the good news of the Kingdom until Christ returns. Make it all about HIM and He will grow you AND your church, in His time, for HIS glory.
But the time is coming — indeed it’s here now — when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship Him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth. – Jesus (John 4:23-24)
