It is a trap for a man to say rashly, “It is holy!” And after the vows to make inquiry. – Proverbs 20:25
Have you ever made a promise or vow to God? Did you keep it?
We all know that that God takes vows very seriously, but do you know why? He takes them seriously because God, Himself, has made a lot of promises and if He had not kept His word, then we would not be able to trust Him … and if we could not trust Him, then we certainly would not be able to believe Him or worship Him. Promise-keeping is one of God’s defining attributes.
We believe God, because He is believable; therefore, if we consistently break our promises to Him, why should He believe us? Think long and hard about a vow before you make it and afterward, keep it no matter the personal cost for there is even one more outcome of promise-keeping to be considered.
The ability of others to believe our God may depend (at least a little) on their ability to believe us.
We must not promise what we ought not, lest we be called on to perform what we cannot. – Abraham Lincoln
