SING!

How can we sing the LORD’s song in a foreign land? – Psalm 137:4

The people of Israel were in Babylonian exile when the psalmist wrote these words. It was a time of great sadness for God’s people, but the Lord encouraged them to sing in spite of their situation. God knew that one day they would return to their beloved Jerusalem and He didn’t want them to forget about it.

As children of God (by faith), we also live on “foreign” soil. This place … this earth is not our home. Our home is with Christ in heaven. Yet, how can we possibly sing the Lord’s song now … here … with the world as it is?

We are on our way home! Yes, the journey may seem long and full of trouble. Indeed, at times it may even seem perilous, but think of Christ. Think of His eternal presence and the rest He gives. Think of His enabling and empowering grace that sustains us for the entire trip … and SING!

Hath not the whole earth a voice? And shall I, can I, silent be? – Charles Spurgeon
