Truth in Any Language

And the work of righteousness will be peace, and the service of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever. – Isaiah 32:17

While overseas, I learned how to communicate in French and began to read a French translation of the Scriptures in order to improve. I have read through the entire Bible in that language three times and sometimes I think the French Bible gives a better translation than my English one. For example, the verse above (translated from French) reads, “Justice will give birth to peace, it will bring tranquility and security forever.” Wouldn’t you agree that this seems to more properly bring out the force of the text?

While it is true that “the work of righteousness will be peace,” it was the justice of God that gave birth to this peace, that made peace possible. The finality of Christ’s work on the Cross also ensured security with God forever. This security is more than a sentiment. The believer’s security in Christ is a reality that is grounded in the historical fact of Calvary.

While “quietness and confidence” are emotional positives, security and reconciliation with God promise so much more! What a rich truth in any language!

Faithful love and truth will join together; righteousness and peace will embrace. – Psalm 85:10
