A Servant’s Devotion

But Ittai answered the king and said, “As the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, surely wherever my lord the king may be, whether for death or for life, there also your servant will be.” – 2 Samuel 15:21

Are you devoted to your King? Ittai certainly was.

David, king of Israel, fled Jerusalem because his son (Absalom) was invading. A lot of the king’s “subjects” fled with him, but many (fearing reprisal) chose to serve the usurper. Ittai was one of those who refused to rebel. He made the conscious decision to follow David, whether it meant life or death. Ittai was absolutely devoted to his king.

If we claim to be “Christian,” then our King is Jesus, but I wonder if we can match such commitment? Have we surrendered everything to our King? Can we boldly state, like Ittai, that “… surely wherever my lord the king may be, whether for death or for life, there also your servant will be?”

I wonder.

The eyes see what the heart loves. If the heart loves God and is single in this devotion, then the eyes will see God whether others see Him or not. – Warren Wiersbe
