When the people came into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has the Lord defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us take to ourselves from Shiloh the ark of the covenant of the Lord, that it may come among us and deliver us from the power of our enemies.” – 1 Samuel 4:3
Because they had been defeated by the Philistines, the Israelites took the ark of the covenant from Shiloh (and the tabernacle) into battle, thinking its very presence would give them the victory. Yet, as a people, their hearts remained far from God. Of course, the Philistines routed Israel and took the ark back with them to Ashdod.
What assurance do you have of victory in this life and the next? Do you believe that because you have a Bible, attend church services, or have been baptized that you are guaranteed victory, that you will indeed win the ultimate battle?
Listen to me, please, you in the Bible, nor you in the church, nor you in the waters of baptism will guarantee anything. You are only victorious if Christ is in you and you are in Him. He is the Victor and only through Him can we surely win.
They always win who side with God. – Frederick Faber
