Then God said to Jonah, “Do you have good reason to be angry about the plant?” And he said, “I have good reason to be angry, even to death.” – Jonah 4:9
Jonah, prophet of God to Nineveh, reluctantly carried the Lord’s message to that wicked, pagan city and their response was widespread repentance. Yet, rather than be pleased with the outcome, Jonah was angry and insolent.
To show Jonah the folly of his attitude, God caused a plant that was providing comforting shade to die. This “bothered” Jonah, because the plant provided personal relief and (in his estimation) had some earthly value. On the other hand, the prophet could not have cared less if every single Ninevite had been destroyed.
As Americans, we rightly decry the atrocities committed by modern-day enemies of the state and the church, but what about the millions perishing under a false religion who have never heard of the Savior? What about the modern-day Ninevites without Christ? As we fight them, may the Lord also use us in some way to win them.
Apathy is the acceptance of the unacceptable. – John Stott
