Israel is a luxuriant vine; he produces fruit for himself. The more his fruit, the more altars he made; the richer his land, the better he made the sacred pillars. – Hosea 10:1
Part of God’s blessing upon the nation of Israel was to make them prosperous, but they failed to understand that the reason for His favor was founded upon His sovereign choice. Israel’s prosperity had nothing to do with their own merit or righteousness.
In response to God’s gracious choice, Israel should have worshiped Him as their Provider. Instead, they used their prosperity to increase their paganism. Rather than return thanks and lay their riches at the Creator’s feet, they built bigger totems and invested in better methods of idolatry. They used God’s riches to promote their own purposes.
May we, who have freely received eternal rewards, not be guilty of making the same mistake.
For a hundred that can bear adversity there is hardly one that can bear prosperity. – Thomas Carlyle
