But you will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death, and you will be hated by all because of My name. Yet not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your lives. – Luke 21:16-19
The original followers of Jesus once asked Him when His new kingdom would become a reality, thinking that it would be soon, and that it would be glorious. The Messiah’s answer was probably not what they were expecting. Instead of triumph, peace, prosperity, and power, Jesus spoke of disasters, false teachers, persecution, famine, and plagues. He even said that all would be hated, and that some of them would die.
Not exactly a textbook pep talk!
Yet, Jesus also spoke of the ultimate reward (eternal life) that would be theirs if they persevered, if His followers just endured to the end. Every circumstance and hardship that they would be asked to face would also need to be measured against this (present and) future reality or all their efforts would be vain, and all hope lost.
When doubts creep in and you begin to think, “What’s the point?”, just remember that He’s the reason for whatever season you’re in.
