Do not listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria, “Make your peace with me and come out to me, and eat each of his vine and each of his fig tree and drink each of the waters of his own cistern, until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.” – Isaiah 36:16-17
The “Rabshakeh” was the cupbearer and spokesman for the wicked king of Assyria. As the Assyrian army amassed itself outside the walls of Jerusalem, he attempted to convince the Judean army to lay down its arms and surrender. He promised each man that surrendered three things: his own grape vine, fig tree, and cistern full of water; until, of course, the moment he would surely come to take them all into captivity!
Our enemy, Satan, makes similar promises. He says, “Make peace with me. Surrender to me (and temptation). Life will be wonderful for you. You will then know prosperity and peace.” Until, of course, the moment he also takes you into captivity and destruction.
We must not be fooled. Worldly pleasure seems beneficial in the moment, but God’s pleasures are eternal. Our enemy believes that he is more powerful than our Lord, but he is not, and neither are we. This is the reason why we must surrender to only one KING OF GLORY, the Lord Jesus Christ.
The reason why many fail in battle is because they wait until the hour of battle. The reason why others succeed is because they have gained their victory on their knees long before the battle came. Anticipate your battles; fight them on your knees before temptation comes, and you will always have victory. – R. A. Torrey
