Does He who disciplines nations not punish? Does He who teaches mankind lack knowledge? – Psalms 94:10
God sees and knows everything. Nothing escapes His complete and perfect omniscience. God disciplines all that He has created and brings it into subjection. Not one single human being lives in a godless vacuum; especially those of us who belong to Christ and certainly those of us who have been called into His vocational service. We will be held to account for how we have responded to God’s gracious offer of a Savior and we will also be accountable for how we have stewarded our relationship with our Savior once received.
The Lord rebukes His re-creation (His Body) in order that it might bear ever-increasing fruit; thereby, more clearly manifesting His glory. The Master prunes His servants in order that they might be the best possible representation of Himself. If something in our lives is lifeless and a hindrance to our growth, then we can expect the Master Gardener to cut it out.
In other words, no matter your position before a holy God, all that is “of the flesh” (be it a thought or practice) will ultimately be removed. Even if you have yet to recognize or acknowledge its life-draining existence, God knows, and He would see it gone.
We cannot give our hearts to God and keep our bodies for ourselves. – Elisabeth Elliot
